About the five styles

Every style has value.
Context determines which to use.

Competing

The Assertive Driver

Assertive and goal-driven. Values being right. Most effective when decisive action is required or certainty is high.

Collaborating

The Partnership Builder

Assertive and cooperative. Sees conflict as opportunity to strengthen relationships. Requires high mutual trust.

Avoiding

The Thoughtful Pauser

Steps back to gain clarity. Effective for trivial matters or when more time is needed before responding.

Accommodating

The Harmony Keeper

Puts others first. Values relationships over personal goals. Preserves harmony but rarely leaves fully satisfied.

Compromising

The Pragmatic Negotiator

Finds the middle ground. Both sides give a little, gain a little. A reliable fallback when collaboration is not possible.
